Perceiving Western vocal discipline
While focusing on the proper western voice training these days, I came to know that western discipline regarding voice production and sound texture is pretty different from the Indian one. Although, I am still analyzing the concept of how the voice should be exactly produced and my instructor is trying hard to teach me, but what I've analyzed till date is that they try to produce full-throated and firm voice through false tone structure. I might have perceived it wrong, but usage of El-Prado on the sustained notes in almost all the songs (I've learned) looks like they avoid to exhibit their incapability of singing in smooth consistency like we've been taught in Indian discipline. Whereas in Indian classical, we are taught that the sustenance of notes should be smooth, plain non-shaky or quivering. However, its a bit unreasonable to be judgmental and especially when El Prado suit the songs in here to enhance the feel and flow of a particular composition. Also, each music of every particular region has its own peculiarity and charisma according to their practiced theory. Even in Indian Classical, we have two totally different genre - north Indian & south Indian.
Anyways, there are certain factors which I tried to perceive during my music classes :
Think about creating maximum space in the mouth for proper voice modulation. I am generally told to think that there enough space in the jaws area. I can remember my instructor always tried to explain me concept of space and more air inside while singing. She experimented different postures and gestures like she asked me to think of a spacious tomb inside which is extended from head to torso. Or, she even asked me to shape a big circle through action while taking higher notes, in order to conceptualize space and full air within for the proper voice throw.
Lowering down the lower jaws while singing diction in a song. This really helps. Singing by dropping the jaws down adds on more space and air which contributes in immediate change in voice clarity and modulation. Ideally, mouth shape should be oval or tall zero while singing which can be exhibited by dropping the lower jaws down.
Singing posture should be more relaxed and easy going. Vision should be straight while performing. Hand movement should ideally be avoided in order to exhibit relaxation and calmness while singing. Although in Indian recital, we apply the hand movement or it naturally comes up with a flow in order to sing more aesthetically with full feel and expressions. But here, the western voice protocol do not allow to move hands according to low or high notes. Regular hand expressions symbolizes lack of confidence and perseverance, according to western protocol.
Diction: Proper American accent and pronunciations of words play a vital role in proper voice production. Well, it might take some time for me to bring the correct pronunciation while speaking and singing into habit, as I have been here for just one and a half year. But undoubtedly this is one of the most prime factor which helps in good singing. Twisting and turning the tongue and shaping the mouth on some vowels, or proper air production on certain alphabets like 'th' ACTUALLY enhances the voice texture. Proper usage of nasal sounds or accent of 't' has much to do with singing and communicative ability as well.
I have also been learning few Italian and Latin songs which is quite beneficial in understanding the American diction quite transparently through differentiating among the languages. The pronunciation of 'd', 't', and 'it' (eet) in Latin fully individualizes the language from others and is really interesting to know and sing. Learning different languages in singing helps in not only in proper discern vocalization but also in enhancing justifiable oratory skills.
Any thoughts ?
